History of the Business
In 1990, John Puryear returned to his hometown of Gallatin, after having earned his degree in Ornamental Horticulture and Landscape Design from the University of Tennessee. He and his wife Laura, who also graduated with a degree in horticulture, decided to make Gallatin their home because of a deep love of the community, which his family had been part of since 1783

Together they start their landscaping business on the family farm on the north banks of the Cumberland River and, with the help of family members, planted their first crop and built their first greenhouse in the early spring of 1991.Since that time, the size and scope of the operation has grown to employ over sixty people and serve a large portion of Middle Tennessee.
John attributes the growth and success of the company to his dedicated staff of professionals who share the core values of honesty and integrity. A strong commitment to customer service and quality workmanship has developed a base of several hundred loyal customers who appreciate the knowledge and attention to detail provided by the staff. Over the years, the scope of services the company provides has grown to meet the demands of the community. Today, Puryear Farms is a full service company offering property maintenance services, landscaping, irrigation, outdoor lighting, hardscapes, and exterior construction services.
Community service has also been a major commitment on the part of John Puryear throughout the years. He serves on numerous boards and committees in his hometown and the company is a strong supporter of local community organizations.
“With business ownership comes the responsibility of stewardship to both the land and to your community. It is our duty to leave the world around us a better place than when we entered it. Landscaping is a calling through which we help to achieve that objective” - John Puryear
