Our History

“With business ownership comes the responsibility of stewardship to both the land and to your community. It is our duty to leave the world around us a better place than when we entered it. Landscaping is a calling through which we help to achieve that objective.” – John Puryear

In 1990, John Puryear returned to his hometown of Gallatin, after earning his degree in Ornamental Horticulture and Landscape Design from the University of Tennessee. He and wife Laura, who also graduated with a degree in horticulture, decided to make Gallatin their home because of a deep love of the community that his family has been part of since 1783.

Together they started their landscaping business on the family farm on the north banks of the Cumberland River and, with the help of family members, planted their first crop and built their first greenhouse. Since that time, the size and scope of the operation has grown to employ over 70 people and serve a large portion of Middle Tennessee.

John attributes the growth and success of the company to his dedicated staff of professionals who share the core values of honesty and integrity. A strong commitment to customer service and quality workmanship has developed a base of several hundred loyal residential and commercial customers who appreciate the knowledge and attention to detail provided by the staff.

Over the last 25 years, the scope of services the company provides has grown to meet the demands of the community. Today, Puryear Farms is a full-service company serving residential and commercial clients, offering design/build landscaping services including hardscapes, property maintenance services,  irrigation, outdoor lighting, snow removal, and exterior construction services.

Community service is a major commitment on the part of John Puryear as he serves on numerous boards and committees in his hometown and is a strong supporter of local community organizations.
